Winter Island is located
At the far eastern end of Salem where the ocean and the harbor and the ancient fort and the campers all convene...
Use google maps or mapquest to determine the best route from your home.
From the North Shore Points Beverly/Ipswich/Hamilton/Gloucester etc...
Rte 128 to Rte 1A in Beverly. Follow 1A through Beverly to the Beverly Salem Bridge.Cross the bridge and stay to the left to continue riding on 1A. You'll notice the new soon-to-be-opened Rte 107 route that will take drivers down to the Salem Train Station. It's not open yet. So don't even try to take it.
Continue on Rte 1A and you'll see a gas station and Coffee Time Bake Shop on your right. At the very next light, turn left on Webb St. (you can also turn left on Arbella, which is the street just before Webb, but you don't have a light with a green arrow to help you out.
Ahead of you will be Collins Cove. Keep it to your left and proceed down Webb Street. Go straight through the next light (A very large Orthodox Church is on your right as you approach this light).
Bear left gently and you'll be on Fort Ave.
(*)Follow Fort Ave. towards the Salem Willows, keeping the power plant on your right. Turn right onto Winter Island Road after the Salem State College Aquaculture Center (the end of a very long, low stone wall will point you to the street) and proceed to the information booth. Speed limit on the island is 10mph. Please obey traffic rules and watch for walkers throughout the camping area. Follow the crowds to the performance site at Winter Island Stage.
From 128/95/Rte 1 North or South
(please note, if you are taking 95 south, there is NO exit for rte 114 east or west from 95. Exit with the first Rte 1 option (there are 2) which will lead you to Rte 62 and 114. Follow signs to 114 East).Follow Rte 114 Eastbound (also known at this location as Andover St.) through Peabody and into Salem, being very careful to follow posted signs. 114 meanders quite a bit, but will eventually bring you to the Center of Salem.
Go over a bridge over a canal where you'll see signs for Rte 107 and the Salem Commuter Rail Station. The City of Salem has been building this massive bypass road from the Train Station up to the Beverly Salem Bridge. It is nearing completion, but it is a real mess.
Exit 114 here, following signs for Rte 107 towards Beverly (after you cross the bridge, there will be a ramp to take you back under it, towards the train station.)
Follow along 107 as it heads past the train station, keeping that on your left, and eventually you'll see where Rte 107 will be heading up to the bridge. You can't follow that road yet, so you have to stay on the road you are on. You'll come to a flashing yellow light where 1A to Marblehead will turn right, but you will go straight here, following 1A north towards Beverly.
At the very next stop light, turn right on Webb Ave. Follow the directions above from Beverly from that point onward.
From Pickering Wharf/1A from Salem State College area
If you are familiar with Downtown Salem, or you're coming up from 1A out of Boston, or you find yourself at Finz, staying at the new hotel, parking in the new parking garage, or gawking at history at the House of Seven Gables, you can come to the island from this direction too.Follow Rte 1A to Pickering Wharf. You will go straight onto Derby Street, which will become a one way street very quickly. Do mind the tourists gawking at history and stepping out into traffic to take pictures of Bunghole Liquors or the House of the Seven Gables (seriously, they do...)
Derby Street will come to a stop sign, with the tourists far behind you. This is Fort Ave. Keep the power plant on your right and cruise to the island, following the directions from the (*) above.
